Hello and welcome future and current MCNIG members! My name is Shallyn Kocis. I am a fourth year nursing student at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario. I am very pleased to be named your 2007-2008 student representative. I was introduced to the nursing profession through my grandmother, who has served as a great role model. My grandmother showed me how one career can reach out to so many people and make a difference. With a great support system behind me, I decided to begin the journey that nursing held before me. During my second year of the nursing program, I was able to complete both a theory course and clinical placement in maternal child. I was so fascinated with my perinatal experience that I knew it was an area, in which I would continue to explore. I am very pleased to be able to continue with my education in perinatal nursing through a fourth year consolidation with the Labor and Delivery unit. I am passionate about the benefits of breastfeeding as well as looking into ways to improve maternal health throughout the perinatal period. I am very excited to be given the opportunity to continue expressing and exploring my interests in perinatal nursing. I am also very grateful to be a representative and advocate for my fellow colleagues. We are the future of nursing! So join us and explore what the MCNIG and NSO have to offer.
If you are a student and interested in MCNIG or becoming involved as a student please contact the student rep, available to you on the contact list. Find out about the advantages of joining us or visit http://www.nso-eio.ca, Nursing Students of Ontario.
