Greetings to all current members of MCNIG, and welcome to those who may become members in the future. My name is Emily Terrasi and I have been elected as the MCNIG Student Representative for 2008-2009. I am currently a fourth year BScN student at the University of Ottawa, in the collaborative program with Algonquin College.
While looking for a career that married my interest in science and health with my love of interacting with people and learning their stories, someone suggested nursing. I decided to give it a try and after my first clinical experience I never looked back. During my second year of the nursing program, I completed both a theory course and a clinical placement in maternal child health. What had always been an interest for me became my current passion after I had the opportunity join two families during the labour process and share the experience of the birth of their child.
In my third year, I undertook a community health project aimed at increasing support breastfeeding at Algonquin College. While I have always believed that breastfeeding is best for both mother and child, the project allowed me to inform myself further and increased my desire to promote breastfeeding to childbearing families. I hope to pursue a consolidation on a Labour and Delivery Unit and work in this area upon graduation. I am also looking forward to working with my associate representatives Caroline Gaynor and Melissa Wallace to share the benefits of MCNIG membership to other interested students.
