OPHA Breastfeeding Position Paper

The OPHA recognizes exclusive breast milk as an ideal food sources for babies, and understands that the protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding will reduce inequities among population groups. The OPHA voices its strong position towards breastfeeding in this paper.

Letter to the editor - Obesity and Breastfeeding

On behalf of MCNIG, Leslie Ashton has written an informative Letter to the Editor, to address the issue and connection between breastfeeding and the prevention of obesity. This letter can be used as a template by members to respond to the media and others on the topic, as Leslie did when she responded to an article in the Ottawa Citizen on Friday, February 8, 2008.


Update from the Ontario Newborn Screening Program

All newborns in Ontario will be screened for cystic fibrosis starting (CF) in April 2008. Early detection and treatment of CF improves health outcomes. With the addition of CF to the panel, there are now 28 diseases screened in the blood sample obtained from the heel prick test. Please see www.newbornscreening.on.ca for information geared to healthcare providers, parents and the public. There are also links to free brochures and fact sheets for your practice.


A Briefing Note for Queens Park
January 2008
An excellent Briefing Note on implementating a Breastfeeding Strategy for Ontario was prepared by the RNAO Home Office, Ontario Public Health Association (OPHA), Ontario Breastfeeding Committee (OBC) and Best Start Resource Centre Working Group. The Briefing Note was made available to individuals who attended the Annual Day at Queens Park.


Reducing the Risk of Childhood Obesity through Breastfeeding

A Working Group comprised of members from RNAO, the Ontario Breastfeeding Committee (OBC) and the Ontario Public Health Association (OPHA) have been working on a document which discusses breastfeeding as a strategy to reduce the risk of childhood obesity.

Congratulations to recent Baby-FriendlyTM designated facilities!

The summer of 2008 marked the official designation of Peterborough County - City Health Unit as a Baby-FriendlyTM Community Health Service. MCNIG wishes to congratulate the health unit on this excellent achievement!

Somerset West Community Health Centre received designation as a Baby-Friendly TM community health service in the Summer of 2007.

On September 17, 2007, representatives from the Maternal Childbirth Nurses' Interest Group and RNAO Head Office, were at the celebrations to congratulate the Centre, and to present a certificate of acknowledgement to Diana Warfield, RN, IBCLC and MCNIG/RNAO member, along with her colleagues.

Such designations recognize organizations' achievement of a global standard of care as set out by the WHO/UNICEF Baby-Friendly Initiative TM. Their designation will reflect the optimal continuum of care for all mothers and, in particular, to support breastfeeding mothers and babies to sustain exclusive breastfeeding and breastfeeding for longer periods.

The Fall of 2006 marked the designation of Thunder Bay District Health Unit as Baby-FriendlyTM. MCNIG was also pleased to hear of Toronto's first Baby-FriendlyTM designated hospital - Toronto East General Hospital! Congratulations to these organizations for all of their hard work and dedication to make this happen!
