The Childbirth Nurses Interest Group - CNIG

Student Column

Hello to all current and future members of MCNIG. My name is Alexandra Stoebis and I have been elected as the Student Representative for the 2009-2010 year. I am going into my final and fourth year of the Collaborative Nursing Program with Laurentian University at St. Lawrence College in Kingston this September.

I discovered my love for the nursing profession after a personal experience with an ill family member. After my first clinical day, I knew I had found the right profession for me.

In my 3rd year I was fortunate to complete a rotation in Labour and Delivery and Maternal Child Health. When I saw the first baby being born, I knew that this special area of nursing is where I wanted to work. I hope to work in this area or Neonatal Intensive Care upon my graduation next year. In addition, I was able to complete a community placement at a Native Friendship Centre in the Aboriginal Healthy Babies Program. I again loved the experience working in Maternal and Child Health. I was able to learn a vast amount of information on native cultures and traditions in regards to maternal and child health, as well as labour and delivery. Overall, it was an amazing experience!

I am looking forward to working as the Student Representative for MCNIG, to share the benefits of MCNIG membership to other interested students.
