Ontario Breastfeeding Committee (OBC)
The Ontario Breastfeeding Committee (OBC) was created in 1998 as a volunteer organization comprised of health care professionals representing numerous organizations and individuals who are committed to protecting, supporting, and promoting breastfeeding in Ontario.
OBC is responsible, in partnership with the Breastfeeding Committee for Canada (BCC) for the implementation of the Baby-Friendly Initiative in Ontario. OBC acts as the contact between the organization seeking designation and the BCC for all matters related to the pre-assessment and external assessment process.
The vision of OBC is to create a population where breastfeeding is the normal way to feed an infant in Ontario. Through the evidence-based best practices of the Baby-Friendly Initiative (BFI) OBC members work to assist facilities to achieving BFI designation. Advocating for a provincial strategy that supports breastfeeding to match global and national standards is an important mandate of OBC. The work of the Ontario Breastfeeding Committee is not funded by any provincial body. OBC is funded solely by membership fees and contributions. Continued support by new and existing members is of utmost importance.
