In 2008, our Network of hospitals (three corporations and 11 separate facilities) embarked on the project of Clinical Documentation and electronic MAR (eMAR), with the initial focus on Medical/Surgical Inpatient units.

We took a phased in approach by starting at the smaller sites, initially going live with two sites as we had the vendor supporting us on-site for the initial go-live. After that, we launched one site at a time and accomplished 10 successful roll-outs over the time span of one year.

The Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario (RNAO) has taking the lead in an exciting initiative in partnership with the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and Canada Health Infoway called the Nursing Peer Leader Strategy.

Nursing Peer Leaders have been selected from each Ontario LHIN and began the work of promoting and fostering nurses' awareness of, and involvement in, eHealth in their workplace.

This past July, Halton Healthcare Services, Oakville, Ontario, piloted software from Iatrics for Medication Reconciliation.

The project was implemented on a busy surgical floor using the Pre-Admission Clinic as the entry point for the patient, and a medical floor that largely services a renal patient population.

Quinte Health Care (QHC) Corporation is a four hospital site in south-eastern Ontario that uses Meditech as its information system.

Electronic documentation (eDoc) was implemented at QHC in 2006. This software changed the documentation processes not only for staff at QHC but also for nursing students from Loyalist College, the local community college.

eMARS, eTARS, RAI/MDS, CIHI. . . after 24 years of nursing, at first these words looked like another list of approved abbreviations to use with my nursing documentation.

In my nursing practice, the introduction and use of electronic technology has changed the way nurses document their care today. Much has changed since I wrote my first nursing care plan as a student in 1982 (which I still have with that old musky smell and yellow colour).

After attending the RNAO eHealth Champion workshops, the Clinical Informatics Nursing Practice Council at St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton met monthly to plan an eHealth promotion strategy.

The plan incorporated the Plan Do Study Act (PDSA) Model for Improvement (Langley, Nolan et al, 1992) to formalize a methodical approach, which addressed the limited frontline nursing staff's eHealth awareness, and understanding.
