What does the G8/G20 mean to you?
As many of you know, the cities of Huntsville and Toronto are the staging ground for the G8 and G20 summit meetings (June 25-27), during which, world leaders will discuss the global economy, the environment and international security.
Poverty on centre stage
As part of the People's Summit activities, more than 55 anti-poverty advocates, nurses and nursing students met at Innis Town Hall Theatre in Toronto on June 18 to watch a special community performance of In My Shoes: A Play About Poverty. The play shares the personal stories and reflections of a group of people living in poverty in Sault Ste. Marie.
Water is a human right
On June 23, nurses expressed their concern about the public's right to access water. Over a three day period more than 785 RNs emailed letters to Prime Minister Stephen Harper urging him to vote 'yes' to the United Nation's motion to recognize water as a human right.
Quality care legislation not yet ‘excellent’
On May 20, Irmajean Bajnok, RNAO's Director of International Affairs and Best Practice Guidelines Programs along with Policy Analyst Valerie Rzepka explained RNAO's view on Bill 46, the Excellent Care for All Act that would enforce pay-for-performance rules for hospital chief executives and make hospitals more accountable for reducing wait times and implementing measures to achieve uniform, high quality of care.

Political shuffle at Queen’s Park
Before the Ontario Legislature officially adjourned for the summer; Premier Dalton McGuinty shuffled and appointed two women to important health portfolios. On May 20, Liz Sandals, MPP for Guelph was named Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care. Two weeks later, Judith Wright was appointed as Deputy Minister of Health Promotion on June 2.
