Practice Recommendations: Caregiver Strain

Recommendation	Level of Evidence
12.0 Nurses in all practice settings should assess/screen caregiver burden, using a validated tool (such as the Caregiver Strain Index or the Self Related Burden Index – see appendix J of the Stroke Assessment Nursing BPG). In situations where concerns are identified, clients should be referred to a trained healthcare professional for further assessment and management.	III

Two validated tools are suggested to screen/assess for caregiver burden:

• Care Giver Strain Index (CSI)
• Self Related Burden Index (SRB)

The SRB can be used as a quick screening tool of caregivers at risk and the CSI may be used for further assessment of the caregiver burden.
